Syracuse police have identified the victim of a fatal drive-by shooting that occurred on Tuesday (September 16) on the city's South Side. The victim, 26-year-old Jakari Townsend, was shot in the chest outside J & B Grocery on Bellevue Avenue. According to Syracuse.com, Townsend was rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. A second victim, a 25-year-old man, sustained gunshot wounds to the torso and shoulder and remains in stable condition.
The incident was reported to police following a ShotSpotter activation, a technology used to detect gunfire. As reported by WSYR-TV, the Syracuse Police Department is actively investigating the shooting and urges anyone with information to contact their Criminal Investigations Division at 315-442-5222. No arrests have been made at this time.
The tragic event has left the community seeking answers as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
