Constellation is conducting tests of its emergency sirens today in Scriba, New York. The tests involve a limited number of 40 sirens located within a 10-mile radius of the Nine Mile Point and James A. FitzPatrick nuclear plants. The sirens are scheduled to sound for three minutes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will continue through Friday (September 19).
According to CNY Central, these tests are part of routine maintenance and are in addition to the monthly and bi-annual checks that ensure the system's reliability. Officials emphasize that this is only a test, and there is no threat to the public. In the event of a real emergency, residents would be instructed to tune into local Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or TV stations for further information.
The sirens are crucial for public safety, covering areas within 10 miles of the Scriba nuclear plants. The Nine Mile Point Clean Energy Center and James A. FitzPatrick Clean Energy Center together produce enough carbon-free electricity to power 1.8 million homes across New York, as reported by Oswego County.
