Misty Carey, the owner of MC Stables in Verona is facing legal charges for animal cruelty. Authorities in Oneida County charged Carey with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals and 17 misdemeanor counts related to torturing and not feeding animals. The charges stem from a three-month investigation that began in July after deputies received reports of malnourished horses at the stable.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, 17 horses were found in poor health at MC Stables, as determined by veterinary doctors using the Henneke Scoring System. One horse, suffering from untreated injuries, was euthanized. Following the investigation, deputies executed a search warrant on July 8 to remove the remaining horses from the property. Volunteers assisted in transporting and boarding the animals.

Carey, 49, was arrested on September 12 and arraigned in Oneida County Court on September 15, where she pleaded not guilty. She was released on her own recognizance. The case has drawn attention to the conditions at MC Stables, which was responsible for boarding, training, and racing horses. The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Rome Humane Society and Leatherstocking Veterinary Services.

The legal proceedings against Carey will continue as the case moves through the court system. The community and animal rights advocates are closely watching the developments, emphasizing the importance of proper animal care and welfare.
