An Auburn Police Department patrol car was struck by a suspected drunk driver on Saturday (September 13) in Auburn. The incident occurred at approximately 3:49 p.m. at the intersection of North Street and Seymour Street while an officer was on routine patrol.
The driver, identified as Michael Nielens, was traveling northbound on North Street when he attempted a left turn onto Seymour Street, colliding with the patrol car. The impact caused airbags to deploy in both vehicles. After the crash, Nielens exited his vehicle and attempted to walk away but was stopped by officers. According to the Auburn Police Department, he smelled of alcohol, and beer and vodka were found in his car.
Nielens failed a field sobriety test and refused an alcohol-sensor test. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) and taken to Auburn Police Department headquarters for processing. This incident marks his second DWI offense, elevating the charge to a felony. Nielens also faces multiple infractions, including open container, driving without a license, and failure to yield the right of way.
The officer involved was transported to Auburn Community Hospital for medical evaluation. Auburn fire and ambulance services responded to the scene.
