An inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility attacked a female correctional officer on Thursday (September 4). The 31-year-old inmate attempted to grope the officer inside one of the facility's dorms, according to the Correction Officers Union and New York State Police.

The incident occurred as the officer completed her security rounds and sat at her desk. The inmate approached her from behind, grabbed her shoulder, and forced her backward from her chair. Once on the floor, he headbutted her, licked her nose, and attempted to grope her. The officer fought back, kicking the inmate in the groin and torso, causing him to retreat. Additional staff then arrived, placed the inmate in handcuffs, and escorted him out of the dorm.

The officer was initially treated by medical staff at the facility before being transferred to Wynn Hospital in Utica for further treatment of injuries, including pain in her knee, elbow, and arm, as well as a bruise on her forehead. The inmate is serving a three-to-six-year sentence for aggravated criminal contempt and aggravated family offense, following a 2024 conviction in Yates County. He is eligible for parole as early as March 2026.

Bryan Hluska, Central Region Vice President, commented on the incident, noting that while assaults on staff have declined over the past six months, the dangers for officers remain daily. He also mentioned that the State Legislature should pass the 'Forcible Touching' legislation introduced in January to increase penalties for such acts against correctional officers. Hluska expressed hope that the parole board would consider the nature of this assault during the inmate's hearing in March 2026.

CNY Central and Rome Sentinel reported on the incident.
