Carmelo Anthony, one of the most celebrated athletes in Syracuse University history, will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday (September 6). Anthony is part of the Class of 2025, which includes Dwight Howard, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, and the 2008 United States Men's National Team, known as the "Redeem Team."
Anthony's basketball journey began at Syracuse University, where he led the team to its only national championship in 2003 during his freshman year. He was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player before entering the NBA. Anthony was selected third overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets, marking the start of a 19-year career that included ten All-Star selections and six All-NBA honors. He played for several teams, including the New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers, and ranks tenth all-time in NBA scoring with 28,289 points.
In addition to his NBA accomplishments, Anthony is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, having played a key role in the "Redeem Team" that won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The team, which included stars like LeBron James and Dwight Howard, restored USA Basketball's dominance on the world stage.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, and the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Anthony expressed his excitement about the honor, saying, "You get the phone call and you hear, 'You're in.' And I think for me, it was a burden off of my shoulders" as reported by NBA.com.
