Starting today, drivers on Interstate 81 in Syracuse will experience lane reductions due to the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project. The New York State Department of Transportation announced that northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane between Exit 17 and Exit 18 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday (September 5). Southbound lanes will also be reduced between Exit 18 and Exit 17 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

These lane reductions are necessary to relocate a temporary concrete barrier as part of the project. Motorists should expect additional overnight closures and slowdowns on I-81, particularly for the installation of steel beams on the Bear Street bridge, which will occur from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights, starting today through Saturday (September 6).

The New York State Department of Transportation advises drivers to use caution and adhere to all traffic control devices in the work zone. Fines are doubled for speeding in work zones, and repeated violations could lead to the suspension of a driver’s license. For live traffic updates, drivers can visit 511ny.org.
