The Onondaga County Health Department is providing free lead testing for children today (August 28) at the Peace Incorporated Eastside Family Resource Center on South Beech Street in Syracuse, New York. Testing will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and is part of the county's lead poisoning prevention program.

Lead exposure poses significant health risks, including learning, behavioral, and growth issues in children. According to the Onondaga County Health Department, a blood test is the only way to accurately measure lead levels in the body. New York State mandates that children be tested for lead at ages one and two, but testing is available for children of all ages at this event.

Parents can bring their children to the event without an appointment, but must provide a photo ID, proof of income, and proof of their children's identity.

For more information, parents can contact the Onondaga County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at 315-435-3271 or visit their website. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidelines on necessary follow-up actions based on test results.
