Former Syracuse University quarterback Tommy DeVito has found a new NFL home with the New England Patriots. After being released by the New York Giants on Tuesday (August 26), DeVito was claimed off waivers by the Patriots on Wednesday (August 27). The Patriots had initially attempted to sign DeVito as an undrafted free agent in 2023 before he joined the Giants' practice squad.
DeVito, a New Jersey native, impressed in his final preseason game with the Giants, completing 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns against the Patriots. Over his two seasons with the Giants, DeVito started eight games, achieving a 65.3% completion rate, with 1,358 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also rushed for 227 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.
The Patriots' quarterback room now includes starter Drake Maye and backup Joshua Dobbs. DeVito's addition comes as the Patriots prepare for their season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on September 7. The Giants and Patriots are scheduled to face each other on Monday Night Football on December 1.
DeVito's journey in the NFL has been marked by perseverance. Despite being a feel-good underdog story with the Giants, he was unable to secure a spot on their 53-man roster for the 2025 season. However, his performance in the preseason finale left a lasting impression, leading to his acquisition by the Patriots.
