The Syracuse Police Department is intensifying efforts to curb the use of illegal vehicles, such as dirt bikes, ATVs, and four-wheelers, on city streets. This crackdown comes after a rise in incidents involving these vehicles, which have been turning downtown intersections into makeshift playgrounds. According to Sgt. Tom Blake of the Syracuse Police Department, the issue is a recurring problem, particularly at busy intersections like East Fayette and South Salina Streets, where reckless driving has been reported.

In response to these activities, the police department has implemented strict penalties. If officers seize an illegal vehicle, the owner faces a $2,000 impound fee. Additionally, fines for operating these vehicles illegally start at $500 for the first offense, increase to $750 for the second, and reach $1,000 for a third violation.

The crackdown is part of a broader effort to ensure safety and reduce crime in the city. Sgt. Blake noted that while overall crime has decreased this year, reports of illegal vehicle use have surged recently. Last year, a fatal accident involving an illegal motorbike at the same intersection highlighted the dangers these vehicles pose.
