The Onondaga County Health Department is offering free lead testing for children this Thursday (August 28) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Peace Incorporated Eastside Family Resource Center on South Beech Street in Syracuse, New York. This initiative aims to ensure children's safety by detecting lead levels, as high lead exposure can lead to learning, behavioral, and growth issues.

The testing is available for children of all ages, and a blood test is the only way to accurately measure lead levels in the body. According to Onondaga County's lead program, New York State mandates lead testing for children at ages one and two. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidelines on necessary follow-up actions based on test results.

Parents can bring their children to the event without an appointment, though they must bring a photo ID, proof of income, and proof of their children's identity. The event, hosted by PEACE, Inc., will also offer school supplies and family resources on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information, parents can contact the Onondaga County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at 315-435-3271 or visit their website.
