Residents of Sullivan are being reminded of the scheduled aerial spraying set to occur tonight (August 15) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The spraying aims to reduce the risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a virus carried by mosquitoes that can cause fever, headache, and nausea. The targeted area for spraying is mostly south of State Route 31, west of Lakeport Road, east of Bridgeport-Kirkville Road, and north of Fyler Road.

The Madison County Public Health Department has contracted Duflo Spray-Chemical to carry out the spraying, using Kontrol 30-30 pesticide, which is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. According to Madison County's official website, the spraying is a temporary measure to control the mosquito population and may lower the number of mosquitoes capable of spreading the virus for up to two weeks.

Residents have been notified through various channels, including local news, social media, and the NY-Alert system. Those in the affected area are encouraged to enroll in NY-Alert for emergency notifications. If weather conditions are unfavorable tonight, the spraying will be rescheduled for Saturday (August 16).

The Madison County Public Health advises residents to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites and minimize pesticide exposure. The health department reassures that the chances of experiencing health effects from the spraying are low. For more information, residents can visit the Madison County Public Health website or call 315-366-2361.
