A boil water advisory is in effect for parts of Oswego following a water main break that occurred late Thursday night (August 7). Residents in the affected areas are advised to boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking or cooking, or alternatively, to use bottled water certified by the New York State Department of Health.

The advisory was issued after the water system experienced a loss of pressure due to the break, increasing the risk of untreated water and harmful microbes entering the water supply. These microbes can cause symptoms like diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and headaches, posing a particular risk to infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Crews are currently on-site working to repair the damage, but the advisory will remain in place until the repairs are completed and the water is deemed safe. The public will be notified through media updates once the advisory is lifted. For more information, residents can contact the City of Oswego Fresh Water Treatment Plant or the Oswego County Health Department.

The affected areas include parts of Route 481 between East Broadway and Utica streets, as well as two buildings on Academy Street. This is the sixteenth water main break near Canalview Mall on State Route 481, according to Oswego County Today.
