Syracuse is set to enhance school zone safety by activating cameras to monitor speeding and red-light violations. The city plans to roll out these cameras over the next few weeks, aiming to deter dangerous driving behaviors in school zones. The initiative includes speed cameras that will operate during school hours and red-light cameras that will function at all times.
According to CNY Central, the fine for a first-time speeding or red-light violation is set at $50, with an additional $25 late fee for unpaid tickets. The fines, determined by New York State, will be enforced by the Syracuse Police Department.
Syracuse will become the first city in New York to implement all three major school-related traffic camera systems: school bus stop-arm cameras, red-light cameras, and speed cameras. Fines will start at $250 for first-time offenders.
The city plans to install 36 red-light cameras and 34 speed cameras, focusing on areas with the highest number of violations. The cameras are expected to be operational by the beginning of the school year, as LocalSYR notes. This initiative reflects Syracuse's commitment to improving student safety and reducing traffic-related incidents in school zones.
