Ulster County Fire Services recently celebrated the graduation of 62 volunteer firefighters at a ceremony held at SUNY New Paltz. These individuals completed rigorous training programs over the past year, equipping them with essential skills in firefighting and emergency response. The graduates participated in one of three Firefighter I training programs, which included Basic Exterior Firefighter Operations and Interior Firefighter Operations, as well as specialized instruction in CPR and self-rescue techniques.

The ceremony also recognized the heroic actions of two local firefighters. Walker Valley Fire Chief Jim Greer was honored for rescuing Charlotte Bean from a house fire in Cragsmoor during Memorial Day weekend. Rosendale firefighter Adam Watson received recognition for saving a teenager with autism from the fast-moving Rondout Creek in August, amid dangerous conditions caused by Tropical Storm Debby.

Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger praised the graduates and the honored firefighters, stating, "Our volunteer firefighters represent the very best of Ulster County." Everett Erichsen, Ulster County Department of Emergency Services Director, emphasized the dedication of the graduates, noting that some put in over 200 hours of training.

The graduates come from various departments across Ulster County and neighboring counties, demonstrating a strong commitment to community safety and service. For more information on volunteering with Ulster County Emergency Services, visit their official website.
