Syracuse Hancock International Airport has completed a major expansion and modernization project, enhancing its facilities to accommodate growing passenger numbers. The project, which cost approximately $20 million, focused on expanding seating, concession areas, and improving passenger flow. Additionally, the second floor of the terminal building was renovated to expand the Federal Inspection Safety facility, ensuring the airport retains its international designation.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the completion of the project, which was funded by the Governor’s $230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. Governor Hochul stated, "The improvements we have made to Syracuse Hancock International Airport give Central New York the first-class travel hub it deserves."
The airport handled over three million passengers last year, marking a five percent increase from 2023. The upgrades include an expanded North Concourse, which now features additional seating and concession spaces. The project also involved the installation of new lighting controls and sensors to improve energy efficiency and air quality.
The enhancements aim to position Syracuse Hancock International Airport as a world-class travel hub, supporting the region's economic growth. Syracuse Regional Airport Authority Executive Director Jason Terreri expressed gratitude for the state’s support, emphasizing the airport's role as a gateway to Central New York and beyond.
The project is part of a broader effort to modernize upstate New York airports, ensuring they meet the demands of the 21st century. The improvements will complement future plans, such as Micron's investment in a semiconductor manufacturing campus in Onondaga County.
