Starting today (July 28), Interstate 81 in Syracuse will experience closures due to the demolition of the East Glen Avenue bridge. The closures will affect the northbound lanes between Exit 16A and Exit 17, and the southbound lanes between Exit 17 and the East Glen Avenue on-ramp. These closures will occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays, continuing through Saturday (August 2) and resuming next Monday until Saturday (August 9).

The demolition is part of the I-81 Viaduct Project, a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the area. Motorists traveling northbound are advised to follow detours via I-481 and other local routes, while southbound travelers will be redirected through alternative paths to ensure smooth traffic management.

The New York State Department of Transportation urges drivers to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones, as fines for speeding in these areas are doubled. The department also warns that construction activities are weather-dependent and may change based on conditions.

For continuous updates and traffic pattern changes related to the I-81 Viaduct Project, motorists can follow the project on social media or visit the official website. The project aims to enhance the region's infrastructure and is expected to bring long-term benefits to the Syracuse area.
