Residents of Oswego and Madison counties are urged to take precautions against mosquito-borne viruses after recent detections in the area. In Oswego County, mosquitoes carrying Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) were found at the Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp in West Monroe. Meanwhile, in Madison County, a mosquito pool in the Town of Sullivan tested positive for both EEE and West Nile Virus (WNV).
The New York State Department of Health announced the findings from mosquito pools collected on July 15, 2025, in Madison County. The EEE virus was found in a species that primarily bites birds, while WNV was detected in a species known to bite birds, animals, and humans. So far, no human cases have been reported in either county.
Health officials recommend several preventive measures to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, including wearing insect repellent, avoiding areas with high mosquito activity, and limiting outdoor activities between dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. There are currently no vaccines or specific treatments for EEE or WNV, making prevention crucial.
