An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fatal crash that occurred on Saturday (July 19) in Clay. The incident involved a motorcycle and a truck at the intersection of Henry Clay Boulevard and Buckley Road. According to authorities, 22-year-old Sakai Lewis was riding his motorcycle when he collided with the truck. Both vehicles caught fire following the collision, and Lewis succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the truck was unharmed.
The crash happened in front of the Byrne Dairy, prompting the closure of Henry Clay Boulevard from Buckley Road to Wetzel Road. The gas pumps at the dairy were also taped off due to their proximity to the crash site. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, represented by Deputy Doug Roser, confirmed that the motorcyclist was not conscious or breathing when emergency services arrived shortly after 8 p.m. Lewis was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition.
Authorities are asking any witnesses to come forward with information that could aid in the investigation. The section of the road remained closed to traffic as of late Saturday night, and more updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
