Family and friends will gather today in Syracuse to remember 15-year-old A'Dhon Thomas, who was tragically shot on June 24 at the Upper Onondaga Park Pool. The calling hours for Thomas are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon at the Belle Grove Missionary Baptist Church, followed by funeral services at Garland Brothers Funeral Home.
Thomas was shot once in the upper torso outside the pool's fence, where families were swimming, according to a criminal complaint. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he later died. The accused shooter, 15-year-old Kyari Cunningham, was arrested earlier this week and is facing charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Cunningham, who was on probation at the time of the shooting, is currently held at the Hillbrook Detention Center and is expected to appear in court today.
Syracuse.com reports that Cunningham was arrested at a home on Martin Luther King Boulevard and arraigned in the youth part of Onondaga County Court. Bail was set at $750,000 cash, $1.5 million bond, and $3 million partially secured bond.
In response to the shooting, city officials closed the Upper Onondaga Park Pool for a day and a half. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced plans for increased police presence around city pools this summer to enhance safety.
