Jamesville Beach in LaFayette is temporarily closed for swimming due to an algal bloom, as announced by the Onondaga County Health Department on Thursday (July 10). The closure is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety while water testing is conducted to check for harmful toxins.

Algal blooms can turn water green and form thick surface scums, potentially releasing toxins that cause skin or eye irritation, diarrhea, and vomiting if ingested. The Health Department advises people and animals to avoid contact with the water during this period. Other park amenities remain open for visitors.

While Jamesville Beach is closed, the public can visit Oneida Shores Beach in Brewerton, which remains open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

For updates on the status of Jamesville Beach, residents can visit the Onondaga County Parks website or contact the Division of Environmental Health.
