A 15-year-old boy named Kyari Cunningham has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on June 24 outside the Upper Onondaga Park pool in Syracuse. Cunningham is accused of shooting another 15-year-old, Adhon Thomas, who was struck in the upper torso and later died at Upstate University Hospital.
According to Syracuse.com, Cunningham was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The arrest took place on Monday (July 7) at a residence on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Cunningham is currently held at the Hillbrook Detention Center with bail set at $750,000 cash, $1.5 million bond, or $3 million partially secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday (July 11).
The shooting prompted city officials to temporarily close the pool and increase police presence at city pools and parks. Mayor Ben Walsh stated that the pool was busy at the time of the incident, but no one else was injured. CNY Central reported that the Syracuse Police Department conducted a citywide search and interviewed numerous people to identify Cunningham as the suspect. The investigation involved executing several search warrants before his arrest.
