The Upper Onondaga Park Pool in Syracuse reopened to the public on Thursday (June 26), just two days after a tragic shooting claimed the life of 15-year-old Adhon Thomas. The shooting occurred outside the pool's fencing on Tuesday (June 24) around 2 p.m., when Thomas was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to Upstate University Hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

The Syracuse Police Department is actively investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made, and the firearm involved has not been recovered. Police Chief Joseph Cecile stated that they have a potential suspect in mind, but the investigation is ongoing. The city's ShotSpotter system detected gunfire in the area, leading to a swift police response with multiple units on the scene.

In response to the shooting, city officials, including Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens, have called for increased efforts to remove guns from the streets. Owens emphasized the need for community action, stating, "These are children we are talking about. These guns have got to come off our streets." The Syracuse City School District also expressed its condolences and encouraged community solidarity.

The pool was temporarily closed for investigation and safety assessments but reopened with increased police patrols to ensure public safety. Parks Commissioner Syeisha Byrd commended the staff for their quick response during the emergency and assured the community of ongoing support and counseling for staff members.

The tragic event has shaken the local community, prompting calls for action and reflection on public safety measures. As the investigation continues, the community remains vigilant and hopeful for justice for Adhon Thomas.
