An investigation is ongoing following a fatal car crash in Syracuse on Thursday night (June 26). The collision occurred at the intersection of James Street and Wilson Street, involving at least two vehicles. According to witnesses, one of the cars was speeding for several blocks before the crash. The impact was so severe that it lifted a fire hydrant out of the ground, leaving it lying on James Street with about four feet of pipe attached to it.
Syracuse Police arrived at the scene shortly after 8:45 p.m. and declared it a "mass casualty" incident, prompting hospitals to be on high alert. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and four others were transported to Upstate University Hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition. The road was closed for several hours as National Grid crews worked on utility lines affected by the crash.
The Syracuse Police Department's Traffic Division is actively investigating the incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
