The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced lane closures on Interstate 81 in Syracuse starting Wednesday (June 25). The closures are part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project, which involves installing steel on bridges over East Seneca Turnpike. The northbound lanes will be reduced to one lane at Exit 78 and Exit 18A, while the southbound lanes will be reduced to one lane from the South State Street on-ramp to Exit 78.

These lane reductions will occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights through Friday (June 28) and will resume Monday (June 30) through Thursday (July 3). According to the New York State DOT, the construction schedule is weather-dependent and may change based on conditions.

Motorists are urged to drive carefully in work zones, as fines are doubled for speeding. Receiving two or more speeding violations in a work zone could lead to a suspended driver’s license. The DOT emphasizes the importance of safety for both drivers and highway workers. For more updates, drivers can follow the I-81 Viaduct Project on social media or visit the DOT website.
