New York State is planning major road and highway improvements to support the upcoming Micron Technology campus in Clay. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) has hired a consultant to design solutions for the expected increase in traffic due to the new development. Over nine million dollars will be allocated over the next five years to develop road and highway exit designs. Construction of the Micron complex is set to begin later this year.

Micron Technology has proposed significant changes to the Route 31 and Interstate 81 interchange in Cicero, suggesting a diverging diamond interchange to facilitate smoother traffic flow. Additionally, new exits are planned for Interstate 81 in Cicero and Route 481 in Clay to prevent gridlock as the chipmaking complex and surrounding community grow. According to Syracuse.com, these changes are part of a broader effort to accommodate the anticipated growth and ensure efficient transportation infrastructure.

Micron's investment in New York is substantial, with plans for up to $100 billion in a megafab project that includes up to four fabs over the next 20 years. This investment is supported by local, state, and federal incentives, including up to $6.4 billion in CHIPS Act funding. Ground preparation for the New York site is expected to start later this year, following environmental reviews. Micron's plans aim to bolster U.S. leadership in memory development and manufacturing, contributing to a robust national supply chain and research ecosystem.
