A Cicero police officer, James Kazmirski, remains on administrative leave after being arrested for aggravated driving while intoxicated. On Friday (June 13), Kazmirski, 45, reported for duty while under the influence of alcohol. A fellow officer noticed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and glassy eyes, and alerted a supervisor. The supervisor then contacted the New York State Police.
According to WSYR-TV, Kazmirski attempted to operate a marked patrol vehicle but was stopped in the parking lot. He consented to a breathalyzer test, which revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.21%, more than twice the legal limit. He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and was released on an appearance ticket.
Kazmirski has been with the Cicero Police Department since 2013 and has nearly 20 years of experience in law enforcement. State Police took him into custody and processed him at SP North Syracuse. Cicero Police Chief Steve Rotunno confirmed that Kazmirski is on paid administrative leave while a professional standards investigation is underway.
Chief Rotunno expressed the difficulty of handling such situations but emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust and safety. Syracuse.com reported that Kazmirski earned $99,515 in 2024. The investigation is ongoing, and further actions will depend on its findings.
