Renwick Avenue in Syracuse is now permanently closed to traffic as of Wednesday (June 4). This closure affects the section between Martin Luther King East and Van Buren Street. The move is part of a larger project to reroute Interstate 81 through the city after the elevated highway is dismantled.

According to Syracuse.com, Renwick Avenue was a popular route for visitors heading to parking lots near the JMA Wireless Dome. The closure marks the beginning of construction for the new Business Loop 81, which will replace the current elevated highway. This project aims to improve traffic flow through downtown Syracuse by utilizing surface streets and a new roundabout at Van Buren Street.

The closure does not impact access to nearby Toomey Abbott Towers senior apartments. As the construction progresses, drivers will need to adapt to the new routes designed to facilitate smoother navigation through the city. The state Department of Transportation is overseeing the project, which is part of a broader effort to modernize Syracuse's infrastructure.
