The groundbreaking for Micron Technology's new plant in Clay has been postponed again, with construction now expected to start in late November or early December. Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon announced that the release of the environmental impact report, initially scheduled for early June, has been delayed to June 25. This report is crucial for the project's progress, as it will trigger a 45-day public review period, followed by a final vote on the environmental impact statement in October.
The delay is due to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency (OCIDA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce taking additional time to ensure the report's completeness. According to Syracuse.com, McMahon emphasized the importance of a thorough assessment, stating that thousands of hours have been spent strengthening the document.
Local residents have mixed reactions to the delay. Some, like AJ Barnett from Liverpool, view the project as a positive economic opportunity, while others, such as Tom Pilger, express concerns about potential environmental impacts. The report will address various issues, including air quality, housing, and wildlife, and suggest actions to mitigate these impacts.
A public hearing is tentatively set for July 24, and the public comment period will begin on June 25. The project, which involves building a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility, is expected to cover nearly 1,000 acres and includes plans for four fabrication plants over the next 16 years. Despite the delays, CNY Central reports that local officials and residents remain hopeful about the project's potential benefits for the region's economy and job market.
