Wildfires burning in Canada are sending smoke toward New York, with haze expected to reach Central New York by Tuesday (June 3). Forecast models indicate that the smoke will mostly remain high in the atmosphere, which means it is unlikely to cause breathing issues or be detectable by smell.
While air quality alerts have been issued for parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes, none have been issued yet for Central New York. According to The Washington Post, smoke from wildfires in Manitoba is affecting air quality across several states, including Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin, where it has reached levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.
The smoke is expected to linger for another day or two this week, with the potential to reach the East Coast. Forecasters suggest staying tuned for updates in case conditions change. USA Today reported that smoke from the Canadian blazes, driven by rising temperatures and low humidity, has already forced thousands to evacuate.
In Syracuse, New York, CNY Central meteorologist Josh Kozlowski noted that computer models show the smoke approaching Central New York by Tuesday morning and afternoon. Residents are advised to monitor air quality updates and take precautions if conditions worsen.
