Syracuse University has announced that Michael J. Bunker, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, will become the new chief of campus safety and emergency management services starting July 1. Bunker, who hails from Denver, will replace Craig Stone, who is retiring after over 40 years in law enforcement, including roles at Georgetown University and the University of Denver.
Bunker brings more than two decades of experience in campus safety and emergency management. Most recently, he served as the chief of campus safety at the University of Denver, where he implemented initiatives such as a mental health campus response team and the use of artificial intelligence-enhanced security systems. He is known for building relationships with student groups and enhancing campus safety practices.
Allen Groves, Syracuse University's senior vice president for the student experience, praised Bunker's innovative leadership and understanding of campus communities' evolving needs. Groves led the search committee that selected Bunker, supported by students, faculty, and staff.
Bunker holds two master's degrees, including an MBA from the University of Denver and a master's degree in project management from Georgetown University. He also has a graduate certificate in executive leadership coaching.
Bunker expressed his excitement about joining Syracuse University, stating, "I look forward to quickly engaging with our community and partnering with students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders to strengthen our emergency preparedness."
