The Syracuse Police Department is actively seeking recruits for its cadet training program, offering a unique opportunity for individuals as young as 18 to prepare for a career in law enforcement. The one-year program includes classroom instruction, physical fitness training, and hands-on experience, all designed to ready participants for the police exam.
Victoria Baratta, director of the Syracuse Police Department (SPD) cadet program, emphasized the program's role in preparing future officers. "We prepare them for police work. Becoming a Syracuse police officer. We get them ready for the people academy," Baratta said. Applicants must be between 18 and 34 years old, hold a high school diploma or GED, and have no felony convictions. They must also consent to a background check and fingerprinting.
The program offers a paid experience and is open to individuals who are dedicated to pursuing a career in law enforcement. Nathaniel Coleman, a current cadet, shared his positive experience, stating, "It’s been really great, learning a lot about law enforcement all sorts of stuff I would’ve never known otherwise."
For those interested in applying, the application deadline is Friday (May 23), and the program is set to begin this summer. More information can be obtained by contacting Victoria Baratta at vbaratta@syracusepolice.org or calling 315-442-5302.
The Syracuse Police Department also hosts the Syracuse Regional Police Academy, a comprehensive 26-28 week training program. Recruits receive training in various areas, including New York State criminal procedure, defensive tactics, and firearms. The academy prepares recruits for a successful career in law enforcement, with recruits compensated for their time during training according to the department's recruitment page.
