Three animal shelters in New York State are set to receive significant financial support for improvements, thanks to a $10.4 million funding initiative by the state. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Oswego Humane Society, the Humane Society of Rome, and the City of Oswego will each receive $500,000 for various upgrades.
The Oswego Humane Society plans to use its funds to add more pet housing, create an isolation room, and establish a maternity ward. Meanwhile, the Humane Society of Rome will install new dog enclosures, two isolation rooms, and new cat enclosures. The City of Oswego will focus on replacing kennels, updating the HVAC system, sealing floors, and creating an outdoor relief area, as reported by Governor Hochul's office.
This funding is part of the seventh round of the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund, which has dedicated over $38 million to 130 projects since 2017. The program aims to support construction, renovation, and expansion projects that enhance animal care and health at shelters across the state.
According to LocalSYR, the grants were awarded based on a need assessment, detailed project descriptions, and cost reasonableness. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of these facilities, stating that they play a crucial role in keeping companion animals safe and well-cared for while they await adoption.
The funding initiative is expected to make a real difference in improving the quality of care for animals in New York, ensuring they have safe and comfortable environments while waiting for their forever homes.
