Woman, 84, Dies After Being Struck by Truck in Baldwinsville

An 84-year-old woman, Deborah Irwin, died from injuries sustained after being struck by a pickup truck in Baldwinsville on Monday (May 19). The incident occurred around 5:28 p.m. on East Genesee Street, near a Dunkin' parking lot. According to New York State Police, the driver, Richard L. Austin, 63, was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Lock Street when he failed to yield the right-of-way, hitting Irwin and trapping her beneath the vehicle.

Emergency responders, including Baldwinsville firefighters, manually lifted the truck to free Irwin, who was then transported to Upstate University Hospital. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries the following day. Austin remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation by the North Syracuse Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them at 315-366-6000. The investigation into the cause of the crash continues.

CNY Central reported that the accident happened just outside a Dunkin' parking lot, while Syracuse.com provided details about the driver's cooperation with the investigation. New York State Police are leading the investigation into the incident.
