Syracuse's lead removal program is once again accepting applications, thanks to a $750,000 boost from Onondaga County. The program, run by Home HeadQuarters, aims to reduce lead hazards in homes, particularly in low-income areas with older housing. It focuses on replacing windows and doors, which are high-friction areas that can release lead dust into the air.

The program is popular due to the high cost of lead removal, with replacements in a single home potentially costing tens of thousands of dollars. Applications opened today and will continue until the funding is exhausted, according to Syracuse.com.

The Syracuse Lead Grant Program, administered by the Department of Neighborhood and Business Development, provides funds for lead remediation. It is supported by grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), among others. The program is open to eligible property owners, tenants, and landlords on a first-come, first-served basis. All work is completed by EPA-certified contractors, ensuring safe and effective lead hazard removal.

Lead exposure often occurs through contaminated dust, paint chips, or soil, especially in homes with lead-based paint. The program's goal is to minimize these risks, particularly for homes with young children. For more information, visit Syr.gov.
