The New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) has announced lane closures on Interstate 81 in Syracuse as part of the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project. Starting today (May 19), the southbound highway will be reduced to one lane between Exits 23A-23B-22 (Hiawatha Blvd/Destiny USA Dr/Bear St) and Exit 20 (Franklin St/West St). These closures will occur daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will continue through Thursday (May 22). The lane reductions will pause for a few days and resume from Tuesday (May 27) to Friday (May 30).
The closures are necessary to facilitate bridge work as part of the more than two-billion-dollar project aimed at improving the infrastructure. According to the NYS DOT, construction activities are weather-dependent and may change based on conditions. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, adhere to traffic control devices, and be aware that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones.
The I-81 Viaduct Project is a major initiative to enhance transportation in Syracuse and is expected to bring significant changes to the region's infrastructure. For more information and updates, motorists can follow the project on social media or visit the NYS DOT website.
