The names of three local law enforcement officers from Central New York have been added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Hoosock were killed in an ambush in Salina in April 2024. Oswego County Deputy Cailee Campbell died in a crash while responding to a call in Volney in September 2024. These officers are among the 345 names added to the memorial this year.
Their names were engraved on the wall over the past few weeks and unveiled during National Police Week 2025. The officers' names were read aloud at the Annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall, an event organized by the National Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
In addition to these three, two other Central New Yorkers were also honored. Sergeant Ronald Owen, who died from COVID-19 while on duty in 2020, and DEC Lieutenant David McShane, who passed away from an illness related to the September 11, 2001, attacks, were also added to the memorial.
According to WSYR_TV, these additions highlight the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and the ongoing risks they face in the line of duty.
