Memorial services for Van Robinson, the former president of the Syracuse Common Council, are being held today (May 12) at Bethany Baptist Church in Syracuse, New York. Robinson, who passed away recently at the age of 87, was a trailblazing civic leader and the first African American to serve as the council's president. He dedicated 18 years to public service, including eight years as council president, before retiring in 2018.
The wake is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at the church, located at 149 Beattie Street, followed by a funeral mass. Robinson will be laid to rest privately at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Robinson's contributions to the community extended beyond his political career. He previously led the local chapter of the NAACP for 12 years, where he focused on increasing minority voter registration and advocating for diversity in hiring within city schools and public safety departments.
