A new construction project on Interstate 81 in Syracuse begins today (May 12), potentially causing significant traffic delays. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced that I-81 southbound will be reduced to one lane between the on-ramp to Interstate 690 east and the exit for Adams and Harrison Streets. This lane reduction will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays until Thursday, May 22, to allow crews to perform overpass work.

Motorists are advised to plan for extra travel time and to follow posted detours. As reported by Syracuse.com, the I-81 overpass in downtown Syracuse has reached the end of its useful life, prompting ongoing maintenance efforts until a planned demolition in 2026.

The NYSDOT reminds drivers that fines for speeding in work zones are doubled, and multiple violations can lead to license suspension. For updated traffic information, motorists can visit 511NY.org.
