Former Syracuse basketball star Carmelo Anthony delivered an inspiring commencement speech to the Class of 2025 at Syracuse University on Sunday (May 11). Speaking at the JMA Wireless Dome, Anthony shared his journey from a college athlete to a soon-to-be Basketball Hall of Famer and encouraged graduates to pursue their passions.
Anthony, who led Syracuse to its only men's basketball national championship in 2003, reminded graduates that success is not a straight path. "Your path won’t be a straight line, and that’s okay," he said. He emphasized that life is about more than just one's major or resume and encouraged graduates to explore new opportunities and passions.
Anthony also acknowledged the challenges faced by the graduates, including a global pandemic and social unrest. He praised their resilience, saying it embodies the "Orange Spirit" of grit, passion, and pride. "You can have multiple careers. You can change directions," Anthony told the graduates, urging them to "chase what sets your soul on fire."
In a personal note, Anthony mentioned his son, Kiyan, who will be attending Syracuse University and playing for the basketball team. Anthony expressed pride in watching his son create his own story.
The ceremony, which took place on Mother's Day, included a special tribute to mothers. Anthony thanked all mothers for their sacrifices and unconditional love. Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud also addressed the graduates and conferred degrees.
