Plans are advancing to install a mural honoring former Syracuse University men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim in Syracuse. Philadelphia-based artist Chris B. Murray, who has roots in upstate New York, is spearheading the project. The mural, which will be three stories tall, is set to be presented to the Syracuse Public Art Council next week for approval. If approved, it will be located on West Fayette Street.
Murray, who has worked with sports teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and Eagles, has been developing the mural for over a year and a half. The design features Boeheim, his wife Juli, and several prominent Syracuse basketball players, including Carmelo Anthony, Pearl Washington, Derrick Coleman, Gerry McNamara, and Hakim Warrick. It also includes Otto the Orange and the redesigned JMA Wireless Dome.
Murray, a lifelong fan of Syracuse basketball, expressed his desire to honor Boeheim, saying, "I mean, for Boeheim not to have a mural in Syracuse, I think is just criminal." He has been working closely with Juli Boeheim and has received support from Jim Boeheim himself.
The project is still in its early stages, requiring city approval and funding. Murray is optimistic about the mural's impact, believing it will be a significant addition to the community and a fitting tribute to Boeheim's legacy. If all goes according to plan, the mural will soon become a prominent feature in downtown Syracuse.
