The New York State Department of Transportation has announced that the on-ramp from Sunset Avenue to Interstate 81 northbound in Syracuse will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays starting Monday (May 5) through Friday (May 16). This closure is part of the ongoing Interstate 81 Viaduct Project, specifically for the removal of the Bear Street bridge abutment and retaining walls.

Motorists are advised to follow the detour, which directs traffic north on Sunset Avenue, east on Bear Street, north on Lodi Street, and finally onto I-81 northbound. The construction activities are weather-dependent, so the schedule may change based on conditions.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones, as fines for speeding are doubled. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, multiple speeding violations in a work zone could lead to a suspension of the driver’s license.

The I-81 Viaduct Project is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the Syracuse area. For updates, follow the project on social media or visit their website.
