Syracuse, New York, is hosting a memorial event today (May 5) at Forman Park to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The event will commemorate the sacrifices made by officers, including Officer Michael Jensen, who was killed last year while responding to a call. The Syracuse Police Department has lost 12 members throughout its history, with Officer Jensen being the most recent.

In addition to Officer Jensen, Lieutenant Michael Hoosock, who served with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office since 2007, was also killed during a home investigation in Salina. Their deaths are part of the 148 line-of-duty fatalities reported across the United States in 2024, according to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. Next month, the names of both officers will be permanently inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The Syracuse event is expected to draw fellow officers, family members, and community members to pay their respects. Spectrum Local News reports that the local memorial ceremony precedes the national tribute, reflecting the community's deep respect and gratitude for their service.

Attendees should be aware of parking restrictions around Forman Park during the event. This gathering serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily and the ultimate sacrifices some make in the line of duty.
