The Westhill High School boys varsity lacrosse team's game against Skaneateles, scheduled for Tuesday (April 29), has been postponed due to an ongoing investigation into a potential hazing incident involving team members. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, which involves approximately 12 players and at least two teammates, as reported by NewsChannel 9.
The alleged incident did not occur on school property, and no arrests have been made so far. Superintendent Steve Dunham emphasized the importance of student privacy, stating, "The details of the incident and the potential outcomes of our investigation are things I cannot comment on." He assured that the district is working closely with law enforcement to address the situation appropriately.
According to CNY Central, the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office is aware of the investigation and will review the findings once the Sheriff's Office concludes its inquiry. Hazing, considered a misdemeanor under state law, is punishable by up to a year in prison.
The Westhill lacrosse team's game against Guilderland was also canceled on Saturday. Practices have been suspended for the time being. Superintendent Dunham reiterated the district's commitment to student safety and mental health, stating that any behavior negatively impacting these aspects will be addressed promptly.
