Former Syracuse University quarterback Kyle McCord has been drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, with the 181st overall pick. McCord, originally from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, is returning to his roots, having attended high school at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia.
During his senior season at Syracuse, McCord led the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) with an ACC-record 4,779 passing yards, earning second-team All-ACC honors. He also set school records for completions and passing touchdowns, finishing 10th in Heisman Trophy voting. McCord's performance helped Syracuse achieve a 10-3 season, the best since 2018.
Before his time at Syracuse, McCord played three seasons at Ohio State, where he developed under quarterback C.J. Stroud. McCord's transition to Syracuse allowed him to showcase his skills as a pocket passer, although he was noted for needing improvement in mobility and quick decision-making.
The Eagles, who have a history of investing in quarterbacks, see McCord as a valuable addition to their roster. Head Coach Nick Sirianni praised McCord's quick decision-making and accuracy, expressing excitement about working with him. McCord will join a quarterback room that includes Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
McCord's selection by the Eagles marks a homecoming and a continuation of the legacy of former Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was drafted by the Eagles in 1999. McCord expressed his excitement about joining his hometown team, calling the moment "surreal" after receiving the call from the Eagles' general manager.
