The next phase of the Interstate 81 project in Syracuse is set to begin. The state has approved a contract to start dismantling a section of the elevated highway in downtown Syracuse. This phase involves reconstructing the portion of I-81 from the southern interchange with Interstate 481 to the start of an over one-mile elevated viaduct.
Construction has already commenced on a new Interstate 690 interchange, which will facilitate traffic flow to and from hospitals and the Syracuse University campus. The project aims to improve infrastructure and traffic management in the area.
According to the New York State Department of Transportation, recent construction activities include bridge deck pouring in Cicero and the installation of a steel girder on the existing I-481 bridge over Totman Road. Additionally, crews are working on bridge abutments and drainage structures in the Syracuse area.
This project is part of a broader effort to transform the I-81 viaduct, with the goal of enhancing transportation efficiency and safety for the community.
