The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse is mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 in Rome on Easter Monday (April 21). Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, led the Catholic Church for over a decade, leaving a legacy of compassion and inclusivity.

Bishop Douglas Lucia of the Diocese of Syracuse expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Pope Francis as a role model. Bishop Lucia recalled his meetings with the pope, stating, "He has been my role model as a bishop." The bishop held a mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to honor the pope's memory. The mass was livestreamed for the public to join in mourning.

Governor Kathy Hochul directed flags in New York to be lowered to half-staff until the pope's funeral, honoring his life and legacy. Governor Hochul praised Pope Francis for embodying the values of compassion, humility, and inclusivity.

Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in February for a respiratory issue that developed into double pneumonia, leading to his passing. His last public appearance was on Easter Sunday, where he blessed the crowd in St. Peter's Square.

The Vatican announced that the first formal liturgical ritual for Pope Francis will occur on Monday evening, with the confirmation of his death and placement of his body in a coffin. The funeral and conclave to elect a new pope will follow.
