Starting Monday (April 21), drivers on Interstate 81 southbound in Syracuse will face lane reductions due to ongoing construction. The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced that the highway will be limited to one lane between Exits 23A, 23B, and 22, as well as at Exit 20. This reduction is part of the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project and is expected to last until Friday (May 2).

The lane closures will occur daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to facilitate striping work. Motorists are advised to use caution, follow traffic control devices, and be aware of the doubled fines for speeding in work zones. According to the Syracuse.com, the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005 states that convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of a driver's license.

The NYSDOT reminds drivers that construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change. The department encourages motorists to plan accordingly and expect potential delays during these times. For more information, travelers can visit the NYSDOT website or use the 511NY service for up-to-date travel information.
