Ten corrections officers have been arraigned in connection with the death of Messiah Nantwi, a 22-year-old inmate at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy. The officers face serious charges, including murder, for their alleged roles in the fatal beating that occurred in March. According to the indictment, the officers used fists, batons, and boots to assault Nantwi, even as he lay handcuffed on the floor. They also attempted to cover up their actions by falsifying reports and planting a weapon in Nantwi's room.
The incident took place during a three-week strike by corrections officers, which led to the deployment of the National Guard to assist in maintaining order at the facility. The guards involved in the incident did not have their body cameras on, which is a violation of state policy. The officers have pleaded not guilty and are expected to return to court next month.
Two of the officers, Jonah Levi and Caleb Blair, have been charged with second-degree murder, while others face charges of manslaughter and assault. The case has drawn significant attention, as it is the second homicide investigation involving correctional officers in New York state prisons within four months. In December, another inmate, Robert Brooks, was beaten to death by guards at the nearby Marcy Correctional Facility.
The Onondaga County District Attorney, William Fitzpatrick, is serving as the special prosecutor for both cases. Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered the termination process for all workers involved in Nantwi's death. As the investigation continues, more officers may face charges, with 18 staff members already having resigned or been suspended without pay.
According to the Associated Press, the officers attempted to create a false narrative to cover up the incident, meeting at a local diner to coordinate their stories. The indictment also alleges that they planted a weapon in Nantwi's room to justify their actions.
WKTV reports that Nantwi's death has raised concerns about the conditions and oversight in New York state prisons, particularly during the recent strike. The case highlights the ongoing issues with prison management and the need for reform in handling such situations.
LocalSYR notes that the investigation is ongoing, and more developments are expected as the case progresses. The arraignment of these officers marks a significant step in addressing the tragic death of Messiah Nantwi and ensuring accountability within the correctional system.
