The Oneida County Sheriff's Office has filed an Extreme Risk Protection Order against Deputy Aaron Alshaman following a fire in Utica. The fire, which occurred on Wednesday (April 9), was determined to be arson, and Alshaman has been identified as a suspect based on strong physical evidence. He was reportedly on duty at the time, with vehicle data placing him near the scene on Kellogg Avenue.
The protection order, filed on April 10, restricts Alshaman from possessing or purchasing firearms due to concerns about his mental health and potential danger to himself or others. Alshaman, who was in a relationship with someone at the affected home, has been placed on paid administrative leave by the Sheriff's Office. Although no formal charges have been announced, arson charges are expected.
The Extreme Risk Protection Order is a temporary measure under New York State's Red Flag Laws, allowing law enforcement to remove weapons from individuals deemed a threat. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (April 16) to further address the case. The investigation into the fire and alleged arson is ongoing, with more details anticipated as the case progresses.
